Background-
The Indian Council of Medical Research organised the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra Innovators to Industry Connect at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, marking the country’s largest biomedical innovation and technology transfer event aimed at commercializing indigenous healthcare technologies.
The event set up one of India’s first structured platforms for biomedical innovation showcasing and technology transfer under the Patent Mitra initiative.
Union Minister of State Prataprao Jadhav inaugurated the programme in the presence of Prof Gobardhan Das, Member NITI Aayog. Jadhav called it a major step in linking Indian science with industry to turn laboratory innovations into accessible healthcare solutions, noting that India is moving from being a consumer of health technologies to becoming a global source of affordable, innovative healthcare solutions.
Das said India has the scientific capability and innovation ecosystem to become a global leader in health technologies, and that the Patent Mitra initiative would strengthen intellectual property protection and speed up adoption of indigenous innovations.
ICMR Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl said the initiative reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring research reaches people through strong industry partnerships.
The event’s major highlight was the transfer of 41 public health technologies from ICMR institutes and innovators to industry partners for development, manufacturing and commercialization.
The technologies span vaccines, diagnostics, medical devices and biomedical solutions, including glycoconjugate and recombinant vaccines for typhoid and paratyphoid, along with diagnostic tools for Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis and Mpox.
In a first-of-its-kind move, India also saw the transfer of inactivated KFD and Chandipura virus biomaterials to industry partners, aimed at strengthening vaccine manufacturing and research capabilities.
ICMR also released the Indian Biomedical Patent Landscape Report and a Technology Compendium to support the country’s biomedical innovation ecosystem.
More than 100 technologies from ICMR institutes, researchers and startups in diagnostics, therapeutics and medical devices were showcased, enabling direct engagement between innovators and industry stakeholders.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said the initiative would strengthen India’s biomedical sector for Viksit Bharat 2047 through stronger public private partnership.
