Background
Kerala’s public health sector is set for a major expansion this month, with healthcare projects worth more than ₹1,800 crore scheduled to be launched across the State. Health Minister Veena George said the initiatives would strengthen medical infrastructure and improve access to quality treatment for people in all regions.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will lay the foundation stone for the Institute of Organ Transplantation at Kozhikode, a ₹643.88 crore project planned as a Centre of Excellence. The institute will coordinate organ transplant treatments, surgeries, rehabilitation, research, and training under one roof. It will begin as a wing of Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital and later move to a dedicated building. The government has approved 60 posts for the centre.
Cancer care will receive a major boost with the inauguration of the Cochin Cancer Research Centre on February 9. Built at a cost of ₹387 crore, the centre will address the long-standing shortage of public cancer treatment facilities in central Kerala.
The second phase of development at Kerala State Homoeopathic Cooperative Pharmacy Ltd. (HOMCO) in Alappuzha will be launched on February 13. Completed at ₹109.82 crore, the project includes a new factory for tablet and ointment production.
A new eight-storey surgical block at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital will be inaugurated on February 16. Built at ₹257 crore, the block includes 526 beds, 14 operating theatres, and advanced equipment worth ₹115 crore.
On February 20, the International Research Institute of Ayurveda in Kannur will be dedicated to the public. The first phase, completed at ₹200 crore, includes a hospital, research centre, and medicinal plant garden.
A new 14-storey building at the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, built at ₹242.42 crore, will be opened on February 23, easing space constraints and improving patient care.
