Background

India is turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to improve its healthcare system, which is expected to reach $650 billion by 2025. According to experts, AI may contribute up to $30 billion to the GDP of the country by simplifying, reducing the costs, and increasing accessibility of healthcare.

Hospitals and startups, technology firms and universities are collaborating to adopt AI solutions. The digital tools of India, such as Aadhaar, UPI, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, offer secure health records and a strong platform of AI services.

Apollo Hospitals is using AI to analyze medical images, predict disease risks, plan treatments, and assist robotic surgeries. Startups like Qure.ai detect diseases such as tuberculosis, stroke, and cancer early. Niramai provides an early breast cancer screening method that is non-invasive and privacy-friendly, using thermal imaging, and is relevant mostly to younger women.

IndianAI and the World Economic Forum reports note three major trends: scaling remote care to underserved regions, incorporating AI in clinical processes, and creating massive health data sets. These trends aim to improve early diagnosis, treatment precision, and healthcare efficiency.

Challenges remain. Many rural regions lack reliable internet and AI-ready equipment. Digitization is uneven, and there is a shortage of trained AI-health professionals. Data privacy and cybersecurity rules are still evolving.

Still, with the right investments, clear guidelines, and skilled professionals, India is poised to lead globally in affordable, AI-driven healthcare, making high-quality medical care more accessible and efficient for millions.
