Key Background :
MG Motor India has registered a stupendous 40% sales growth for May 2025, and the Windsor EV is the driving force behind this achievement. Since its September 2024 launch, the Windsor EV has revolutionized the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, leaving competitors in the segment in the rearview mirror at a rapid pace.
The Windsor EV will be sold in three variants—Excite, Exclusive, and Essence—specifically designed for urban families and EV-first consumers. The price of the vehicle between ₹14 lakh and ₹16 lakh places it as a good choice in the mid-size electric vehicle segment. Having a contemporary look and decent practicality, it boasts a competitive driving range of 332 km per charge. Powered by an LFP battery of 38kWh, it gives a stable power delivery, while the fast-charging feature fills it up to 80% in just 55 minutes—convenient for those with no time or not many charging stations available.
A highlight of MG’s approach has been its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) concept, which was launched with the Windsor. Here, buyers can buy the EV without the battery at a much lower upfront price. Instead, customers rent per kilometer for battery use. Though just 15% of customers have gone for the BaaS model, it shows that the majority of buyers continue to prefer outright ownership.
Production of the Windsor is conducted by MG at its Halol plant in Gujarat. The plant has already produced more than 15,000 units, with the manufacturer increasing production further to respond to increasing demand. MG also has plans to import additional EVs in its “MG Select” lineup, such as high-end electric vehicles like the Cyberster and the M9.
In a competitive marketplace, Windsor’s initial success indicates increasing consumer trust in EVs, and MG’s emphasis on price sensitivity, reliability, and feature-loaded products has hit the right note. As the EV adoption curve becomes more exponential in India, the Windsor has placed MG Motor India firmly in the running in India’s electric future.
