Background:

CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI Kolkata, has opened a dedicated Bone Bank, becoming the first private hospital in Eastern India with a fully operational facility for regulated bone grafts. The center aims to improve surgical care in trauma, cancer, spine, and reconstructive surgeries.

The Bone Bank provides a steady supply of safe, processed grafts that meet national and international standards. By offering structural grafts, corticocancellous blocks, morselised grafts, and cancellous chips, the facility allows surgeons to select grafts based on the specific clinical requirements of their patients. These options are expected to expand reconstructive possibilities for individuals undergoing tumour resections, complex fracture repairs, nonunion surgeries, spinal fusions, or deformity corrections.

The facility ensures access to safe, pre-screened grafts through stringent donor evaluation, microbiological testing, validated sterilisation processes, and full traceability. Ready-to-use allografts will reduce dependence on autograft harvesting, which often increases operative time, causes donor-site pain, and limits graft volume.

Speaking on the clinical relevance, Dr. Rakesh Rajput, HOD & Director of Orthopaedics, highlighted that dedicated bone banks play a key role in advanced orthopaedic reconstruction. He emphasised that standardised and documented allografts help restore structural stability without subjecting patients to additional trauma.

Sombrata Roy, Unit Head at CK Birla Hospitals CMRI, said the Bone Bank strengthens the hospital’s clinical infrastructure by ensuring reliable access to regulated grafts, supporting complex surgeries, and reducing patient waiting periods across the region.

The launch was attended by senior health officials from West Bengal, including Shri N. S. Nigam, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare; Dr. Swapan Saren, Director of Health Services; and Prof. (Dr.) Indrajit Saha, Director of Medical Education, reflects the state’s commitment to ethical and standardised tissue banking.

Guidance from Prof. (Dr.) Ajoy S. M. of Ramaiah Medical College & Hospitals helped develop the hospital’s quality protocols and operational framework. Beyond clinical use, the Bone Bank will also support research, surgical training, graft performance studies, and simulation-based learning, positioning it as a regional hub for safe bone procurement and distribution.
