Background

The Telangana Health Department has expanded organ transplantation services to MGM Hospital in Warangal and the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad. This decision was announced by Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha during a Jeevandan review meeting on Wednesday.

The services were earlier available only at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Gandhi Hospital, and Osmania Hospital in Hyderabad. Now, more patients across the state will have access to advanced organ transplant treatments.

The Health Minister directed officials to prepare proposals to set up organ retrieval centres in all former district headquarters. This step aims to make organ donation and transplantation easier and more accessible.

The government will establish special teams of senior medics, one per organ, with the health secretary as the supervisor. The teams will enhance patient care and the transplant operations in the government hospitals.

Rajanarasimha also stressed the importance of recognizing and supporting the families of organ donors. He requested the government to formulate strategies to offer financial assistance to cover final expenses and other essential support to donor families.

Additionally, the minister prescribed the implementation of the provisions of organ swapping in the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) in a way that results in legal and effective organ transfers.

This addition is a big move towards enhancing the process of organ transplantation in Telangana and is an indicator of how the government is determined to ensure that healthcare is more affordable and accommodating to the patients and the donor families.
